AcroSports Past, Present & Future .
Founded in 1993, AcroSports is a non-profit, community-based organization housed in the landmark East Gym of San Francisco's former Poly High. Our mission is to teach and develop the physical, performing & circus arts, serve our community in a safe, positive environment, and to offer activities that encourage teamwork, build strengths and self-esteem, and enhance life's experience.
Once a fully-equipped high school gymnasium and stunning example of 1930's art deco architecture, by the early 1990's, the gym had become an abandoned pigeon roost. Ultimately saved from demolition by the advocacy of local residents, AcroSports as it exists today - a 4,700 square-foot facility with full gymnastics equipment, circus rigging, an 800 square-foot dance floor and supporting office, exercise, and party space - is the direct result of volunteer labor and hands-on community support.
Run by a volunteer Board of Directors, AcroSports is staffed by professionals and supported by parents, students, friends and institutional sponsors. We are determined to remain the best by attracting and training talented individuals in acrobatics, preschool physical development, dance, capoeira, gymnastics and the circus arts. We are committed to safety and to working appropriately and effectively with students of varying experience and ability.
AcroSports serves over 10,000 children and adults a year in ongoing programs at our site and elsewhere in the community. We partner with schools, daycare centers, various city programs and other local non-profits to provide physical education & recreation programs for their constituents, both at AcroSports and other off-site facilities. We also offer tuition assistance for regular session classes at the AcroSports gym in order to serve families from diverse economic backgrounds throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area.
2008 marks AcroSports' 15th Anniversary, which seems to have come in a blinking of an eye. Considering how much we've grown in the first decade and a half, expect many more surprises in the years to come!
